What is "Yield", what affects it, and how do you estimate it?
Yield is a standard industry term that means how much of the product you can expect to have after harvest and it is measured in weight, usually grams per tray.
In this context, yield is affected by multiple factors:
- microgreen variety
- some are heavier or larger than others
- seeding density
- our SowKits are designed to avoid common problems with over-seeding
- growing conditions
- such as: heat, humidity, time of year, how much light and water your microgreens receive
- plant health
- structurally sound, healthy and nutritious microgreens weigh more
- condition at harvest
- freshly hydrated microgreens will weigh more but excess moisture will shorten their shelf life in storage
- date of harvest
- more mature greens will weigh more but growing them past the recommended harvest date starts to diminish their nutritional value and affect their flavour
You can measure your yields to help you compare your cost of growing microgreens vs purchasing them in a grocery store.
